How to choose the right software for modal analysis

What is modal analysis software?

Modal analysis software is used to identify the dynamic properties of structures, including natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes.

Modal analysis can be performed using:

  • Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) – based on ambient or operational excitation and made on a structure in-situ
  • Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) – based on controlled excitation and made on a structure isolated from the surroundings in a test rig

The choice of software depends on the structure, test setup, and analysis goals.

Key features to look for

When selecting modal analysis software, the following capabilities are essential

  • Support for multiple identification methods
such as data-driven Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI), and Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD), and FRF-based methods, such as Complex Mode Indicator Function (CMIF), and Rational Fraction Polynomial in Z-domian (RFP-Z)
  • Support for both OMA and EMA
allowing flexibility across different test conditions
  • Signal processing tools
including filtering, spectral estimation, correlation analysis, harmonic detection and reduction
  • Modal validation tools
such as stabilization diagrams, Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), comparison of synthetic and measured spectral densities or FRF’s
  • Visualization capabilities
for mode shapes and structural behavior

Choosing between OMA and EMA

  • OMA is typically used when:

    • the structure is in-situ and subjected to operational (ambient) forces
    • controlled excitation is not feasible

    EMA is typically used when:

    • controlled excitation in laboratory conditions is possible
    • high measurement control is required

Example of modal analysis software

Specialized software is required to perform reliable modal analysis.

ARTeMIS Modal is developed for both Operational and Experimental Modal Analysis and provides tools for modal parameter estimation, validation, and visualization.
