Listening to Bridges with ARTeMIS Modal: Kristína Bezručová’s PhD Journey

One of the most rewarding aspects of our work at SVIBS is the opportunity to share knowledge with researchers and engineers who are shaping the future of structural dynamics and Operational Modal Analysis. Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Kristína Bezručová, a PhD student from Brno University of Technology, for an internship combining specialized training, practical work with ARTeMIS Modal, and discussions with our team.

With an academic background spanning both structural engineering and mathematics, Kristína brings a unique perspective to her research on bridge monitoring, modal analysis, and Structural Health Monitoring. Her work focuses on understanding how changes in structural properties are reflected in modal parameters and how these relationships can be used to assess the condition of real bridge structures.

Having followed developments in Operational Modal Analysis for several years and already being familiar with ARTeMIS Modal, Kristína joined SVIBS with a clear objective: to expand her expertise, gain practical experience, and explore new ideas that could support her ongoing PhD research.

In this interview, she shares her academic journey, impressions from the internship, and thoughts on working with ARTeMIS Modal.

- Could you tell us a little about yourself and your academic background?

I am currently a doctoral student and a teaching assistant at the Institute of Concrete and Masonry Structures, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Brno University of Technology.

Previously, I graduated from the Master's programme in Civil Engineering – Structural and Transport Engineering, specializing in concrete bridge structures. At the same time, I completed a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University in Brno, where my thesis focused on numerical mathematics.

- What is the focus of your PhD research?

My doctoral research focuses on the application of dynamic measurements and Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) as diagnostic and experimental tools for bridge structures that use prestressing cables as load-bearing elements.

The research investigates the relationships between changes in modal parameters and structural changes related to mass, stiffness, geometry, cable tension, and structural system configuration. It also addresses the limitations of current dynamic measurement techniques and modal analysis algorithms, as well as the conditions under which they can be reliably applied to real bridge structures.

- What kind of projects is your research team now working on?

Our research team focuses on the use of dynamic response measurements as a non-destructive diagnostic tool for identifying potential damage and structural anomalies through changes in modal parameters. We are also involved in the long-term monitoring of bridge structures and the investigation of their seasonal behaviour.

Currently, within the framework of a research grant project, we are conducting experiments involving stiffness modifications and controlled damage to bridge structures or their individual components. These experiments are being carried out on real bridges constructed from precast concrete beams and serve as reference measurements for the development and validation of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods for this bridge type.

Such bridges are widely used throughout the Czech Republic, and many of them are now more than 50 years old.

In addition, we collaborate with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication on the development of wireless smart sensors capable of performing on-board data processing using Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) techniques.

- How does your background in mathematics contribute to your research?

As part of both the grant project and my PhD research, I am responsible for evaluating data collected from various structures. This allows me to combine my mathematical background with my knowledge of the static and dynamic behaviour of structures.

- What motivated you to apply for an internship with ARTeMIS Modal?

I have actually been interested in ARTeMIS Modal for many years. Around 2018 or 2019, while searching for information about Operational Modal Analysis (OMA), I discovered your YouTube channel.

At that time, I also contacted your office to ask whether you offered any kind of student license, and you kindly provided me with 24-hour access to ARTeMIS. 😊

At the end of 2025, our department contacted you to request a quotation for your software, as we were looking to expand our capabilities and introduce specialized software for both academic research and commercial projects.

The opportunity to undertake an internship with ARTeMIS Modal aligned perfectly with the current requirements of my PhD programme, which includes a mandatory internship abroad. Given my long-standing interest in Operational Modal Analysis and my previous experience with your software, I considered SVIBS an excellent place to broaden my knowledge and gain valuable practical experience.

- How was your experience working with ARTeMIS Modal? 

My experience with ARTeMIS Modal was very positive.
I found the software to be highly user-friendly and organized into logical sections, which made the workflow intuitive. The geometry creation and data preparation for Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) are straightforward, and the evaluation process guides the user efficiently towards the results.

- What was the main goal of your internship?

The main goal of my internship was to make the most of this opportunity and gain valuable knowledge that would support my PhD research. As I mentioned earlier, a significant part of my work involves the evaluation of Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) data.

 Therefore, participating in your training course was an excellent opportunity to learn more about current trends in the field and gain hands-on experience with specialized software.

- What was your experience working with the ARTeMIS team?

I also had the opportunity to spend time at your office, which I greatly appreciated.

Palle always found time to talk with me and answer my curious and endless questions. His answers helped me think about problems in a different way than I was used to and inspired me in my future work.

- What were your impressions of the training course?

I considered the training course to be really great.

I enjoyed the practical experiments we carried out, and even the mathematical parts explaining the different methods were very interesting. The course provided us with a solid background of the methods used, including the situations in which they work particularly well and the limitations of each of them.

Among the basic methods, I particularly like EFDD because it is intuitive, user-configurable, and provides valuable information about the damping of structures. I found it very useful for understanding and interpreting the measured data.
And, of course 😊, I also like SSI. In my experience, it performed better when dealing with closely spaced modes, although the evaluation setup was somewhat more demanding and required greater attention.
